Advice and Examples for the AQA Individual Research Project (German)

The individual research project can definitely seem like the most challenging aspect of a language A Level. A two minute presentation on an aspect of the foreign culture, followed by ten minutes discussing eight elements of the chosen theme in more detail, can seem incredibly daunting. I can confirm that it is not easy, having completed the AQA speaking test fairly recently,  however it is far from impossible. This blog post is definitely worth a read if you are unsure as to the best way to approach the task and could do with an example.

The first step is, of course, to choose a theme. If there is nothing that immediately interests you then make a mind map and consider which ideas you would like to find out more about. Choosing a German/French/Spanish film which you are not currently studying may be easiest, as you will already be building an analytical vocabulary in your chosen language due to the essay writing exam. If you need help with writing essays in a foreign language click here. As the Germans and I share a concern for climate change, I chose to focus mine on something which exists in Germany and not England: The Pfand System. I found it great that Germans can take their used bottles back to the shop and get money back.

The next stage is the initial research. Creating the foundations of my research actually took less than two hours. I simply went online and printed out relevant websites. After skimming through and gaining a vague understanding, I highlighted areas which I could talk about in more depth when asked questions about my eight sources. Some people found flaws in the system and other people were very opinionated. These were good starting points for further research.

I watched YouTube videos, translated German websites and asked my German friends for their opinions until I knew I had a decent understanding of the subject. After some more note-taking, highlighting and annotation I began to organise my thoughts and think of which eight sources/themes I could write on my coversheet for the examiner to ask more questions about. Then I wrote the first draft of my presentation.

The presentation should be brief, clearly signposting the areas you wish to discuss after, whilst flowing logically and including justification of your opinions. Stating why you are passionate about your chosen area of research is also advisable. On the coversheet you are able to write down your chosen areas. For example, I wrote down "The difference between disposable and returnable bottles" and then drafted out a response to the obvious question "What is the difference between disposable and returnable bottles?". By planning in this way, you can have a vague idea of what you may be asked in the exam. In the eight responses I drafted I tried to plan sentences using complex grammar such as the passive and subjunctive.

To demonstrate the logical connection between the presentation and the questions I prepared for, and to show how to incorporate complex German grammar, I included my presentation and questions in English below.

The German Pfand System

According to a government report, the Pfand system law has lead to one of the most successful deposit systems in the world. Pfand is a proportion of the price of a drink, which you get back when you return the empty bottle.  There are some containers that are excluded from this law, such as bottles for juice, milk, wine, spirits and food containers. There are two types of bottles: returnable bottles and disposable bottles. In 2014, a survey was conducted and half of the Germans did not know the difference. I am very interested in this topic because I believe that the environment is a very important theme. In my opinion, it is our moral duty to prevent environmental pollution and climate change. Pfand often means that bottles are not thrown into rivers or roads because you can get money for the bottles. Of course there are also flaws. Although returnable bottles are more environmentally friendly, not all stores offer returnable bottles. So you have to go by car to another shop. To sum up, I believe that the deposit system is great, because there are so many more advantages than disadvantages.

1) What would you consider to be the difference between Einweg/Mehrweg?

2) What are the laws? Have they changed for the better?

3) Containers that are excluded from the law. Should they be excluded in your opinion?

4) How is it more environmentally friendly?

5) What is the websitewww.liveworkgermany.com and how useful is it?

6) What are the Disadvantages? Are they severe?

7) Are there really more advantages than disadvantages?

8) why is it “one of the most successful systems in the world”

Elemis Sweet Orchid Body Cream

This Elemis Sweet Orchid Body Cream is actually the first thing I have reviewed since starting university. Perhaps this is because it is one of the few products which I can slot effortlessly into my skincare routine in this new very fast-paced lifestyle. Although the instructions say to massage into cleansed skin, I find it super convenient for use straight after the shower at the gym. The product has a thin consistency which is absorbed very quickly by the skin, so that I do not feel at all sticky when putting my clothes on. Especially after a more intense work-out, when my body feels absolutely exhausted, I feel that applying this moisturiser helps me to feel healthy and re-vitalised. Taking a couple of minutes to sit down and do more than my usual facial skincare routine, is such a good method of relaxation. It can really make a difference to your day when everything else seems so hectic. There's something about exercising, showering, and then moisturising which makes you feel as though you are properly attending to your body.

I particularly like the Sweet Orchid Body Cream as it smells simply delicious. Living in a city, it is nice to have a light, sweet fragrance to make you feel just that little bit fresher. It is great that Elemis has created such a scent, yet maintained a high quality, ensuring that their moisturiser does not smell too synthetic or unnatural. In addition, the cream itself is very hydrating. The difference is definitely visible after applying: My skin has a little extra glow and a smoother texture. For a longer term effect however, I would recommend using this daily rather than just a few times a week.

It is definitely at the more expensive end of the scale, priced at about £27.00 for 200ml, however I consider Elemis to be a high-end brand which is nourishing and gentle, even on my sensitive skin. A little bit goes a long way and I anticipate that I will still be using this same tube in a few months time.
